2019 House of Delegates

The Medical Association of Georgia’s (MAG) 2019 House of Delegates (HOD) meeting will take place at the Evergreen Marriott in Stone Mountain on Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20. MAG’s Board of Directors will meet on Friday, October 18.

The HOD is MAG’s primary legislative and policy-making body.

The HOD consists of delegates who represent county medical societies, specialty societies that meet minimum membership requirements, and a number of sections – including International Medical Graduates, Medical Students, Organized Medical Staff, Resident Physicians, and Young Physicians.

This year’s HOD will feature…

– A complimentary lakefront ‘Welcome Reception’ that will be sponsored by ACG Wealth from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 19. All delegates and alternates delegates and sponsors and guests are encouraged to attend this event.

– A magician who will be performing during the Welcome Reception on October 19.

– A ‘Cook Out/BBQ’ that will take place on a patio at the Evergreen Marriott on Friday, October 18. The menu will feature hamburgers and hot dogs and a barbecue buffet, which will include chicken and pulled pork and salmon. The cost of this event is $65 per person (plus a $5.59 processing fee), which includes dinner and two drink tickets. 

– A formal ‘President’s Inaugural Dinner’ which will take place at the Evergreen Marriott on Saturday, October 19 – following the ceremony to install Andrew Reisman, M.D., as MAG’s president for 2019-2020. The cost of this event is $72 per person (plus a $6.01 processing fee), which includes a plated dinner, two drink tickets, and table wine.

– A free ‘After Party’ that will take place at the Evergreen Marriott beginning at 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 19 that will feature a DJ, dancing, and two complimentary drink tickets per person.

– A ‘King of Pops’ ice cream pushcart that is being sponsored by the MAG Alliance that will be set up near the hotel’s pool from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 19. All HOD delegates and family members and guests are encouraged to stop by to enjoy a complimentary frozen treat.

Please note that you do not need to contact the Evergreen Marriott to reserve a roomSimply complete the online registration form by clicking here and MAG staff will make a room(s) reservation on your behalf. If you register by September 26, the cost of a room will only be $164 per night plus taxes. The credit card that you use to register for the HOD will not be charged for your room(s) until you check into the hotel.   

MAG’s awards will be presented during the morning sessions to honor the recipients to the greatest extent possible.

MagMutual is encouraging every delegate/physician who attends the HOD meeting to attend a complimentary lunch program that it will host in the Stone Mountain Ballroom at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 19. 

MAG’s Board of Directors will meet at the Evergreen Marriott at 1 p.m. on Friday, October 18.

HOD attendees are encouraged to download MAG’s app, which includes key information for this year’s meeting (e.g., reports and resolutions, logistical details, contacts). Please note that you will be able to obtain a discounted rate of just $3 per night (plus tax) for the park’s “gate entry fee” if you mention that you are with MAG when you enter the park for the HOD meeting. The resort will add this fee to your final bill. Also note that the resort offers complimentary self-parking.

MAG to host medical student abstract competition

The Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) will host a medical student abstract competition for MAG member students in conjunction with its 2019 House of Delegates meeting – an event that will take place at the Evergreen Marriott Stone Mountain Resort on Saturday, October 19. 

The competition will have four categories, including basic science/bench work, clinical research, public health, and case studies. Just one winner will be selected in each category, and the winning abstracts will be published in the Journal of the Medical Association of Georgia. Every student will also be given the opportunity to participate in a 'Best Pitch Competition,' where they will have 45 seconds to “pitch” a panel of physician judges. The winner of this competition will be featured on MAG’s website. 

Contest details… 

– The deadline for the abstracts of 350 words or less is the end of the day on Monday, September 10. 

– The contest is open to every MAG member student in every class in every medical school in the state. 

– Submissions are limited to one abstract per primary author. 

– Acceptance emails that include additional details will be distributed by Monday, September 17. 

– Contestants must set up their poster exhibits in the lobby of the Westin no later than 12 p.m. on October 20. 

The posters should… 

– Not exceed 36 inches by 48 inches. 

– Include a title in all capital letters that is brief and clearly states the abstract’s content.

– List the presenting author’s name first.

– List the name and just one degree (e.g., BA or MPH or M.D.) for each author. 

– List the name(s) of the author(s) and their institution(s), including the city and state. 

Participants must attend the meeting in Stone Mountain, they must set up their posters, and they must be a MAG student member.

MAG accepting 2019 awards nominations

The Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) is encouraging component county medical society (CMS) and specialty society leaders and MAG members in the state to honor the individuals and/or organizations they believe deserve to be recognized for their contributions to the medical profession by nominating them for a MAG award in 2019.

To honor the recipients to the greatest extent possible, the winners will receive their awards before the entire House of Delegates during one of its sessions at the Evergreen Marriott Resort in Stone Mountain on October 19-20

The MAG awards include…

– The Lamartine Hardman Cup, which is presented to a physician who has solved any outstanding problem in public health or made any discovery in surgery or medicine or such contribution to the science of medicine – including but not limited to excellence in the field of medical education. Nominations must be made by a CMS. 

– The Joseph P. Bailey Jr., M.D., Physician Distinguished Service Award, which is presented to a physician for distinguished and meritorious service that reflects credit and honor on MAG. Nominations must be made by a CMS. 

– The Physician's Award for Community Service, which recognizes physicians for going above and beyond the call of duty for community service. Nominations may be made by a CMS or an individual member physician.

– The Jack A. Raines, M.D., Humanitarian Award, which is given to a physician who makes an outstanding humanitarian contribution to his or her fellow man, community, country or world community beyond the normal practice of medicine. Nominations may be made by a CMS or a member physician.

– The Donna Glass Non-Physician Distinguished Service Award, which honors a non-physician for their contributions to the advancement and support of medicine. Nominations may be made by a CMS or a member physician. 

– The John B. Rabun Award, which is presented to a CMS that performs outstanding community service to make medicine prominent in its community. Nominations must be made by a CMS. The award can be presented to more than one CMS in a year. 

Nominators must complete the online nomination form by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 26Only nominations that are submitted using this online form will be accepted. Please note that it is not possible to save your work during the middle of the application process. MAG consequently suggests that you write all of your answers in a Microsoft Word document and then copy and paste the information into the online form. The MAG Awards Committee will accept re-nominations.
