Young Physician Section (YPS)

The mission of the YPS is to strengthen the value of MAG to young physicians by:

  • Being the voice of young physicians through policy development and advocacy.
  • Promoting young physician leadership within MAG.
  • Providing a forum for the education and dissemination of information unique to the needs of young physicians.

The YPS is led by a governing council and has a voting seat on the MAG Board of Directors, as well as delegate seats at the MAG House of Delegates. MAG members who are under the age of 40 or are within their first eight years of practice are automatically represented in the YPS.

Contact Renai Lilly at rlilly@mag.org or 678.303.9263 to join MAG’s YPS.

2018 American Medical Association (AMA) Interim Meeting Update

Shamie Das, M.D., had the honor of representing the YPS in the AMA YPS Assembly during the 2018 interim meeting on November 10-13 in National Harbor, Maryland. The Assembly was presented with three resolutions and one late resolution, as follows:

  • Resolution 1: Destigmatizing the Language of Addiction
  • Resolution 2: Peer Support Groups for Second Victims
  • Resolution 3: Bullying in the Practice of Medicine
  • Late Resolution 1: White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific

All items were adopted as amended by the Assembly. The report can be found here: https://www.ama-assn.org/sites/default/files/media-browser/public/yps/i18-yps-reference-committee-report-annotated.pdf. A considerable portion of the Assembly was spent discussing the resolutions before the AMA House of Delegates from the perspective of practicing young physicians. The final positions can be found here: https://www.ama-assn.org/about/yps-meeting-documents.

Dr. Das had the privilege to offer testimony based on MAG policies and experience as a young physician to help shape the section’s final positions and offer amendments to improve the language of proposed resolutions. Dr. Das was also selected to participate in the Handbook Review Committee for Reference Committee B which was primarily focused on Legislative Advocacy. Furthermore – based on discussions within the YPS – he was able to assist with the handbook review and reference of applicable MAG policies and provide feedback the MAG AMA Delegation in establishing their positions on the items of business. A final report on the actions of the HOD will be forthcoming. Consider following the AMA on Twitter or visiting the website for news items related to the meeting.

Aside from the items of business, the most exciting aspect of the meeting are the many opportunities to network and develop relationships across the house of medicine, including introducing Georgia physicians who were not previous MAG members to the delegation. This meeting was attended by the following Georgia young physicians: Tracey Henry, Toyin Okanlawon, Nikhila Raol, Tina Shah and Cliff Sullivan who will be or are now MAG members. These physicians represented their specialties in the AMA YPS Assembly and/or the AMA HOD. The reach of the YPS is broad. The section looks forward to their continued participation in MAG and the AMA!

If you have any questions or suggestions on how the YPS can improve the activities or policy in relation to AMA, please do not hesitate to reach out to Dr. Das directly at sdas@emory.edu.

Social Events

The YPS hosts social events throughout the year to engage members. The governing council encourages MAG non-members to attend these events. For more information on upcoming events, please contact the governing council at magyoungphysicians@gmail.com to be added to their distribution list.
