AMA weighs in on drug addiction/opioid crisis report

The American Medical Association (AMA) has submitted a letter to President Donald Trump to respond to an interim report that was prepared by the Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis.

In the September 19 letter, AMA President James L. Madara, M.D., urged President Trump to “take the necessary steps for an emergency declaration.”

AMA’s recommendations include…

“…[waiving] Medicaid’s 16-bed federal limit to treat patients with a substance use disorder.”

“…[suspending] federal regulatory and other barriers to providing buprenorphine.”

“…[directing] the Attorney General to enforce existing substance use disorder parity laws.”
