EHR/HIT expert to appear on ‘Top Docs Radio’ show

Christopher Kunney, a leading EHR and health IT consultant and the managing partner of IOTECH Consulting, will appear on the Medical Association of Georgia’s (MAG) ‘Top Docs Radio’ show that airs at 12 p.m. Tuesday, November 28.

“U.S. health systems invested more than $10 billion in electronic health records (EHR) systems between 2008 and 2013,” reports Kunney. “Now consider that this number was expected to grow to between $10 billion and $15 billion in 2016 alone.”

The former AT&T executive and Piedmont Healthcare CIO explains that, “These investments have represented large capital expenditures, but few health system stakeholders – if any – have seen a reasonable return on these investments.”

Kunney concedes that, “It’s clear that a lot of physicians in Georgia aren’t exactly enthralled with EHR in general.” And to that point, nearly 60 percent of the 180 physicians who completed a survey that MAG conducted in July 2017 have a “generally unfavorable” view of EHR.

Kunney says that, “It is easy for practices to feel overwhelmed by the EHR technology that is now available in the marketplace, so it is essential for practices to be both smart and focused when it comes to selecting an EHR system or vendor or consultant.”

His most important EHR considerations include…

– Good vendor/consultant agreements and communications
– Adequate physician and practice staff training
– Work flow optimization and shortcuts
– Knowing how to turn IT into a “utility”
– Technology oversight and governance

– Determining one’s “must-haves” in advance
– Matching a practice’s needs and work flow

Kunney will also address the steps that a practice should take to make a successful transition from a paper to an electronic patient records system.

He concludes that, “There are steps that physicians and practice staff can take to begin to get to a point where they can leverage their EHR system to enhance both patient care and their bottom line.”

Physicians and practice staff can contact Kunney at or 888.699.6992.
