Lawmaker & MAG’s CEO discuss link between insurers and rising health care costs on ‘Top Docs Radio’
Georgia Rep. David Knight (R-Griffin) and Medical Association of Georgia (MAG) Executive Director Donald J. Palmisano Jr. discuss the link between health insurers and rising health care costs on the latest episode of MAG’s ‘Top Docs Radio’ show.
“Insurers are unquestionably responsible for rising care costs and affecting the quality of health care by interfering with the patient-physician relationship,” says Rep. Knight. “Insurance premiums and co-pays and deductibles are rising at an exponential rate, while health insurance benefits are decreasing – keeping in mind that the major health insurance companies are enjoying record profits on a parallel track.”
Rep. Knight is concerned about the prior authorization process, too, pointing out that, “Physicians have to get an insurer’s prior approval or permission to prescribe medication or physical therapy or to order diagnostic tests or labs or imaging. It’s clear that the insurer’s primary motive is to maximize profits by paying out as little as possible in claims.”
He adds that, “Health insurers have created a complex system that the average patient simply doesn’t understand – one that lacks transparency.”
MAG sponsors two ‘Top Docs Radio’ episodes per month. Between downloads and live listeners, the program has reached more than 80,000 listeners – which includes people in all 50 states and 84 countries.
MAG’s ‘Top Docs Radio’ show is supported with a grant from Health Care Research, a subsidiary of Alliant Health Solutions.
