Anesthesiologist, mother of three, and first-generation Chinese-American Michelle Au, M.D., announced today that she is running to be the Democratic nominee for State Senate District 48. Incumbent Senator Zahra Karinshak (D) announced in August 2019 that she is running for the Seventh Congressional District open seat.
“I became a doctor to help people and fix difficult problems. I am now entering a new phase of public service for these exact same reasons,” Dr. Au said. “I’ve found that many of the problems my patients face cannot be fixed at the bedside. Many factors like access to health care, education, economic opportunity, and safety affect the health of our community far more than anything I can do at the hospital.”
In a Facebook statement, Dr. Au said: “With my front-line medical experience, expertise in public health policy, life as a working parent of three school-aged kids, and as a child of immigrants, I’m ready to lead Georgia towards a healthier future.”
Dr. Au has been practicing anesthesiology for more than 10 years and is an equity partner at Physician Specialists in Anesthesia at Emory-St. Joseph’s Hospital, a private practice group. Dr. Au graduated magna cum laude from Wellesley College in 1999 and received her doctoral of medicine degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She completed her residency training in anesthesiology at Columbia, where she also trained in pediatrics. In addition, Dr. Au holds a Master in Public Health from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.
Dr. Au is married to Joseph Walrath, M.D., an oculoplastic surgeon, and they live in Duluth with their three children, Cal (14), Mack (11) and Nina (7). Georgia State Senate District 48 includes John’s Creek, Duluth, and parts of Lawrenceville, Peachtree Corners, and Suwanee.
