‘Top Docs Radio’ show with MCG’s dean now online

A recent recording of 'Top Doc Radio' with David Hess, M.D. – the dean of the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University and the executive vice president for medical affairs and integration at Augusta University – is now online.

MCG is the state’s public medical school, and it has the eighth largest medical school enrollment in the U.S. In addition to its main campus in Augusta, MCG’s statewide presence includes regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students in Albany, Rome, Savannah and Brunswick. It also has a four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia.

“MCG offers clinical training at more than 200 sites across the state that cover the full spectrum of medicine, from tertiary and quaternary care hospitals to small-town solo practices,” explains Dr. Hess. “MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to nearly 500 residents in 48 different programs.”

The stroke specialist and biotech entrepreneur adds that, “Our researchers and clinicians focus on illnesses that affect large numbers of patients, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine, and genomics.”

Dr. Hess also notes that, “MCG’s clinical faculty share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 80 clinics and hospitals across the state.”

MCG has approximately 9,000 living alumni, about half of whom live in Georgia. About 20 percent of Georgia’s physicians went to medical school or completed their residency at MCG or one of its teaching hospitals, while some 95 percent of the 230 students who are admitted to MCG each year hail from Georgia.

Finally, Dr. Hess stresses that, “One of MCG’s key goals is to provide physicians for Georgia’s rural and otherwise underserved areas.”

MAG sponsors the ‘Top Docs’ program twice a month. Between downloads and live listeners, it has now reached more than 50,000 listeners – which includes people in all 50 states and 84 countries.

MAG’s ‘Top Docs Radio’ show is supported with a grant from Health Care Research, a subsidiary of Alliant Health Solutions.
