AMA/ABMS release ‘emergent [MOC] themes’ summary

The American Medical Association (AMA) has released a summary of the “nine emergent themes” that were identified during a conference that took place in March that was sponsored by AMA’s Council on Medical Education and the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) to “determine how continuing certification can meet the needs of diverse stakeholders and to develop recommendations for the Vision for the Future Commission.”

The participants included “all ABMS member boards; selected specialty societies, state medical societies, and accrediting organizations; and other national organizations that have an interest in this topic.” They “reviewed innovations in the continuing certification process” and considered information that was “related to international continuing certification processes.”

AMA says that the conference “was not intended to generate a consensus opinion, and consensus was not reached; however, a set of nine emergent themes was identified. All conference participants were given the opportunity to review a draft summary document and offer suggested edits.”
