CMS flagging key ‘Medicare Promoting Interoperability’ dates

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is reminding Medicare Promoting Interoperability Program participants about some important dates and deadlines. This includes…

November 30, the deadline for critical access hospitals (CAHs) to submit a hardship exception application. CMS says that, “CAHs may avoid the Medicare downward payment adjustment if they can show that compliance with the requirement for being a meaningful electronic health record (EHR) user in calendar year (CY) 2019 resulted in a significant hardship.”

December 31, the last day of the 2020 Medicare Promoting Interoperability Program EHR reporting period.

January 1, the first day of the 2021 Medicare Promoting Interoperability Program EHR reporting period. CMS notes that, “The reporting period for new and returning participants attesting to CMS is a minimum of any continuous 90-day period.”

March 1, the deadline for 2020 data submission. CMS stresses that, “Medicare eligible hospitals and CAHs must attest through the QualityNet Secure Portal.”
